# ClaimIdentifier

`ClaimIdentifier` parses an 8-character claim number string into its canonical two-part identity: a 7-character claim number and a single check character, the split used throughout claims processing to validate and address a claim.

| Field | Value |
| --- | --- |
| **Operation ID** | OP-CORE-04 |
| **Trigger** | Claim number parse |
| **Inputs** | Raw claim number string |
| **Outputs** | 7-character claim number, 8th check character |
| **Primary components** | `ClaimIdentifier` |
| **Entry point** | `Core/SAIF.Core/Contracts/Claims/ClaimIdentifier.cs` |

## Steps

1. `ClaimIdentifier` accepts the raw claim number string and splits it into the first 7 characters (the claim number) and the 8th character (the check character) ([CORE-BR-030](../business-rules.md#core-br-030-a-claim-identifier-is-7-characters-plus-the-8th-check-character)).
   - Behavior for input shorter than 8 characters or otherwise malformed is unverified**.
2. The two parts are exposed as separate properties/values for the caller to use in downstream claim lookups and validation.

## Process flow

The following diagram visualizes this operation's control flow.

	Start([Raw claim number string]) --> Split["Split into 7-char number<br>and 8th check character"]
	Split --> EndOk([Number and check character returned])
```
## Failure and edge-case behavior
- Input shorter than 8 characters or otherwise malformed is not verified to have defined behavior in this contract**.
